Work was expected to be completed in May after Lambeth council approved plans for Crystal Palace railway station in February last year.
But much of the scheme, developed by Transport for London (TfL), has not yet started and works could now be trimmed.
Originally, the station was to get a new ticket office, lifts to all platforms, better lighting, new displays and CCTV.
A TfL spokesman said: “The original plans proved more complex and thus more expensive than first thought.
“Currently, the budget for the station remains the same, £8million, and we anticipate completing the project by autumn 2011.”
Recession
He also said the recession meant that the project still needed to “obtain best value for money”.
He said: “We reserve the right to change the scope of the project to keep it within any spending restrictions that might be imposed as a result of the Government’s October public spending announcements.”
Currently, the only TV screens displaying train times, for all the platforms at the station, are at the ticket office at the top of the stairs.
Passengers changing trains have to go to the ticket office to find out what platform their next train leaves from.
Arriving on the new Overground line at Crystal Palace means climbing 63 steps, going down another 34 steps, walking across a bridge and going up another 22 steps to reach the displays in the ticket office.
TfL said the new display would only be added to the platforms when work on the station is completed in autumn 2011.
