Benny’s Fish and Chips at 30, North Street, Clapham will be serving special World Cup cod battered with a St George’s cross.
Benny’s has previous for unusual battered food. Proprietor, Ben Stylianou, age 49, said: “I’ve been here for 35 years. We’ve battered many things. Christmas pudding with whipped cream in batter, full Christmas dinner in batter, full roast beef dinner in batter for the Queen’s birthday and strawberries and cream in batter for Wimbledon are a small selection.
“Tournaments like the World Cup create football supporters out of non-supporters. It’s nice to have something to talk about, it’s an atmosphere creator.”
The red cross is put onto the fish with a special two stage battering process.
If fans want something else apart from cod Mr Stylianou can put a St George’s cross on any battered food.
Benny’s will be serving the fish from the beginning of the World Cup until England get knocked out or return victorious.
Mr Stylianou said: “I think England’s chances are as good as as anyone else and hopefully the best team will win and if not they’ll get to the quarter finals.”
Here’s hoping England batter the Germans and get a plaice in the finals.
